On December 9th, 2020, SpaceX conducted a test of their Starship SN8 prototype in Boca Chica, Texas outside of Brownsville. Despite very low expectations, it successfully lifted off, completed 2 planned engine shutdowns and reached its planned apogee of 12.5km.
Then it shut down its engine and belly-flopped back to the landing pad, successfully relit 2 of its engines, and performed a bellyflop to tail-down maneuver, before losing pressure in the fuel header tank, causing it to lose its engines and crash down faster than survivable, although right on target.
Follow Cosmic Perspective for some more incredible footage and watch their incredible SN8 film!!! -
This was shot from nearby South Padre Island along with Cosmic Perspective (Ryan Chylinski and Maryliz Bender), Spadre (Gene and Rachel Gore).

That is clean audio? So that's what it really sounds like? I assumed the microphone was clipping almost the entire time and was a terrible choice...
jeromesnail 2 muaj më parë
That's actually how rockets sound like. You can tell at the explosion that is not clipping at all, the sound is kinda compressed during the big boom, but not clipping.

Nope, that’s what it sounds like IRL. No clipping. It’s just the sound ripping from super sonic airflow.

At first I thought it was the sound of the ship falling through the air (just before raptor re-light). But then realized it makes more sense that it is the turbo pump spool-up sound. If you listen closely, at about T+5:56 (6:06 in video) you can hear a subtle rumble and slowly it winds up in speed until it rapidly changes just before raptor re-light at T+6:30 (6:41 in video) -- SO COOL
Thumpernats 3 muaj më parë
Is there any control input from the ground staff during the flight or is it all computerized?.. I've watched those raptor engines fire up a thousand times ....

Tell Elon: Wouldn’t a Red-hot Electric coil dunked into the Methane or LOX tank raise the tank pressure quickly? or if that would heat the bulk of the liquid, squirt a small amount of the liquid gas onto a red-hot electric coil suspended above the liquid gas. This should pressurize the gas tank quickly. There is already an emergency pressure relief valve so it can’t over pressurize.

Gimbal, vectoring thrust Raptors with gyro input produces a nice sonic boom crack in our atmosphere, I imagine it 2 be louder on mars having a less density. Maybe if raptor 42 reignited it might of slowed all that stainless steel down slow enough to deploy legs and land, who knows. I'm just a ss welder.

I-Love-Space 3 muaj më parë
I have a question. Those attitude control thrusters that fired on SN8 during the flip maneuver --- are they the final versions that will burn methane and LOX or are they just interim versions that use compressed nitrogen? I heard that the new attitude control thrusters were one of the many new technologies(along with In Orbit Refueling!) that made NASA less willing to bet on SpaceX as the primary contractor on Artemis landing system. (Although I am super happy they gave them some funding to demonstrate many of those technologies.) I can bet NASA has the idea that SpaceX will do 10 times more with less money than the Blue team will do with much more. Give SpaceX less money and less time and they are MORE INNOVATIVE.... :)

Well done. The only thing missing is a non-zoomed window showing a reference of how fast it was moving as seen from the ground. Because the video is zoomed, there is no scale reference. But great job. Just brings home what an amazing accomplishment the SpaceX team has made.

So the landing "gears" were not deployed before the landing? Was this intentional?
james minett
james minett 3 muaj më parë
I mean it "landed" before it was meant to as it sort of fell when the engine wasn't producing enough thrust. If the engine had produced enough thrust it would have slowed down more and probably have taken like 5-10 more seconds before it got close to touching the floor giving enough time to deploy the landing gear.

Brhett Egerton

The green is burning copper from inside the raptor engine. The header tanks lost pressure at the last minute and the engine started burning itself up
