Tim, could you see a future test schedule work up through what was previously abort modes of Shuttle? Ie they are currently RTLS, then they move to Trans-Atlanic, then finally a once around to really test the re-entry profile. Also could they eventually consider a massive drone ship to catch the booster down range rather than have it return to the launch site?

Spacex should use flux pinning to stop Starship in bellyflop above an electrically charged pad. The cold belly from sloshed liquid oxygen/methane on ceramic heat shield tiles can create a superconductor quantum locking situation that cushions, slows, and stops the rocket in mid air. Tim ask Elon if they have considered this. Just imagine seeing Starship (BFR) skydiving down to the pad, slowing, stopping, floating, and rotating like the actual BFG!

Are these short static fires failures? They sure do look like aborts. That said, SpaceX might be testing the automated launch abort system. It seems that is the case bac=use with an un-planned aort they would stand-down until they fixed the problem and not do another one so soon. These are likey planned launch aborts.

Odysseus Rex 2 muaj më parë
@Chris Albertson You couldn't do it for a trip to Mars, you certainly could for one to the Moon.
Chris Albertson
Chris Albertson 2 muaj më parë
@Odysseus Rex There will never be 100 people on one of these. Musk is saying that they could in theory fit 100 people on a ship but that is like saying 20 circus clowns fit inside a VW beatle. Yes, they do in both cases. You simply can not fit 100 crew and all the air, water, food and equipment that need in one Starship Look at the volume taken by these things in other spacecraft. SpaceX has never said they have a way to shrink this. So use Crew Dragon as an example of the technology they have to work with. With 100 people inside and headed to mars, we assume the ship is just the thin steel shell of a nose code with ZERO systems inside, They just fill it with air and people. Each person gets a 7-foot cube, that holds them, all the food air and water they will need for 26 months and life support and exercise equipment, and the cargo they take to mars. A person and all this in a 7-foot cube. I doubt you can just the food and water in that space. 6 or 7 astronauts is a more reasonable crew size for a mission to Mars. Maybe 100 people if you are flying between cities on Earth and everyone stays belted into their seat. But I doubt the FAA would allow this.
Odysseus Rex
Odysseus Rex 2 muaj më parë
@Chris Albertson No, there is no way you can "abort" one hundred crew an passengers. Fighter jets have ejection seats, space capsules have abort mechanisms, multi decked space *ships* do not.
Chris Albertson
Chris Albertson 2 muaj më parë
Just like the Space Shuttle, Starship will be so safe that no abort system is not needed. OK, seriously They could add an abort system at some later date when they convert "cargo-Starship" to "crew-Starship" I can imagine some kind of capsule-based pod that looks a lot like Crew-Dragon at the very top of the ship. It will be years before humans fly in this.

Tim. I suspect the howling is pressure relief valves or regulators passing through unstable regions of their operation during shut down. These could be in the hydraulics, the fuel or the oxidizer fluid handling system. Nearly all fluid handling systems employ devices of this type in one fashion or another. You might want to ask Elon about it. FWIW this type of operational instability can transmit fatiguing vibrations through the plumbing, resulting and burst pipes and joints. This is what caused the loss of rudder control on the Amoco Cadiz Oil tanker and was the root cause of it running aground and spilling 1,604,500 barrels of oil along the coast of France in 1978. The Cadiz was blown off course towards a rocky shore in a storm. Just as you hear in some car's power steering when you turn the wheel full hard, when the pilot on the Cadiz turned full hard rudder to avoid the rocks, the the hydraulic relief valves squealed. Except in this case the Belville washers in the hydraulics resonated at the same frequency at the bolts holding the flanges together. As the pilot maintained hard rudder the bolts fatigued and broke causing full loss of rudder. I only mention this because it appears that the Starship uses a lot of Stainless in its plumbing and Stainless is quite vulnerable to fatigue failure.

5:19:27 Regarding the water deluge question. The reason the deluge is done by spraying water all over is for absorbing sound waves produced by the engines. It probably helps somewhat with the heat as well, but the main reason for it is to prevent concrete from cracking due to acoustic shock. By spraying water all over, tiny droplets are being produced. Each tiny droplet absorbs some of the energy from the sound waves and heat up. All of the droplets together are able to absorb enough acoustic energy to soften the blow to the concrete. A big pool of water would have a similar problem to bare concrete, which is that a mass of water really resists getting out of the way when impacted. In the case of sound waves, they will happily reflect off the water, back up at the rocket. There will probably be some spray kicked up which might help a little, but likely nowhere near as well as the mist produced by water deluge systems of today.

3:45:20 Question: "I just want to know, why isn't everyone as excited about this as we are?" Answer: When I was a kid, I watched space launches thru the 1960's and 70's. I felt the excitement of a national effort. The astronauts were American heroes, and they took the entire country and most of the world with them on their missions. Today, Virgin Galactic, Blue Origin and SpaceX are private programs, benefiting private goals. They have nothing to do with me. Launching a Telsa into solar orbit is a stunt, a child's game. I have no more interest in watching some rich man's Gold Plated Space Penis than I would have watching his actual diamond-studded penis.

SpaceX is in serious business now. By the next month or so we will see SN Starships do static fires back to back and maybe multiple static fires. Each SN Starships will have its own mission to improve upon the system, design and overall function of the rocket. By the next half of the year we might see a full pledge orbital launch!

@Nolsp oh I see thank you for the information
Nolsp 2 muaj më parë
For one thing, all the starship systems are reletively on the early stages of development so checks and evaluations are more frequent. Also, the absence of any flame diverter makes the concrete pad/floor highly susceptible to damage (another reason for the short static fires). With SN9, the engineers seem to be more confident of the tweeks and improvements they have made (to both the SN9 and the launch site) and so decided to go for three static fires.

Regarding weekend Boca Chica Beach closures, Texas public beaches must normally be kept open. But there is an agreement between Cameron County and the GLO (Government land office) that allows Cameron county to make exceptions for space activities. However this agreement does not permit closures on Saturday or Sunday from memorial day through Labor Day, unless Cameron county gets permission from the GLO. So it appears weekend closures are possible as long is Cameron County gets permission from the GLO for dates between Memorial Day and Labor Day. @Lucas Martinez TBH I disagree. Sn8 got extremely close to nailing the landing. It only failed due to loss of pressure in the methane header tank, burning up the engine and causing a loss of thrust. Now with Sn9 that issue has been addressed and a temporary solution added. The only way I can see Sn9 having an RUD is if they overlooked some critical damage caused by the highbay fall, which is kind of unlikely as they wouldn’t have put it on the pad at all were it significant. Or the weak flip-out landing legs giving out during or after landing.
