SpaceX will be conducting a 10 km test flight of their SN9 prototype vehicle. This flight will be a repeat of the largely successful SN8 test flight, with some possible minor flight profile changes.
SN9 will lift off from Boca Chica, Texas under the power of its three Raptor engines. The Raptor engines will shut off one by one during ascent to decrease loads and acceleration on the vehicle. At apogee, the single Raptor engine still burning will initiate the vertical-to-horizontal flip before shutting off. SN9 will make use of its body flaps to keep it stable during descent. Prior to landing, SN9 will ignite two of its Raptor engines to reorientate itself back into a vertical position and perform a propulsive landing.

This is the second time I'm watching this channel and seeing the launch of the SpaceX Starship SN9. (The first one was the launch of the Starship SN8). This dude, with the glasses is so unprofessional that i can't even put into words how he is ruining the total experience of watching the launch/es. (This is the second time i mentioning this). I get the excitement the guy is having. Because I am a space nerd as well. Though he does not look a child, but he sure do behave like one. Too bad, i did enjoy the launch and everything except his mouth running CONSTANTLY. Couldn't decide to either mute the launch completely or not? Because if i would have muted, i would've missed the experience of the sound the rocket has to give out. Too bad, don't think I am going to give it another try for launch of the S10. Going to watch it from a another ALnets channel. (Sorry guys, less money for your channel/pockets). And that this dude thinks he is going to Mars, he is not. Future man kind is, and the Elites. But not him! (That's only a wishful thinking). Or maybe he means mankind, who knows? Personal message to this dude: "You are not going to Mars. Elon does do not want yappie children on board". Only mature candidates are going to pass the test. Get this guy to shut the "F" up, or i will decide to watch the next launch on another YT channel. Or wait... He might be a virgin? That would explain the yappyness. (And even if he paid someone to take his virginity, that would not count as not being a virgin anymore). Last but not least... At 4:40 this guy is explaining like we are stupid and blind, and can't figure out for our self's what we just saw and is happening or has happened. This guy is projecting him self more and more how stupid he really is. (Definitely a virgin). ;o)

4 things that I do not like about header tanks, especially Oxygen header tank. 1) LOX header tank too far from engines. You have 50 meters line than need to transport 500kg/sec oxygen per 1 raptor engine, imagine 3 raptors firing. 2) Pressure from LOX header tank is almost twice at engines depending on rocket position. In rocket horizontal position you do not have height difference from header tank, so pressure at engine is same as pressure in that tank, 6 bars, BUT when rocked change position from horizontal to vertical (during landing manoevre ) in vertical position you have oxygen now 50m higher than engines, so since specific weight of LOX is almost the same as water you have hydrostatic pressure difference of 50 m (like big water tower) that have 5bars extra on that 6 bars from pressure in the header tank. So now in horizontal rocket position you have 6 bars and in vertical you have 6+5=11 bars at the engine. 3) Pressure drop speed of small tank is much faster than big tank when you emptying that tank. 4) Oxygen header tank is much stronger heated because it's outer shell is at 100+ m/s wind speed and LCH4 is inside protected from wind. Two different condition for header tanks. Personally I do not like design of LCH4 header tank. What I know, only reason why Elon used header tank in the nose is because of rocket favorable balance. Also some guy below me mentioned that fast manoevre from horizontal to vertical can destroy high speed rotating fuel pump because gyroscopic effect. I would like to hear what Elon think on all about this. We do not know about a lot of thinks in rocket design and control ability , and I hope so that he counted on all variables that can came from this above mentioned.
Dean Su
Dean Su Muaj më parë
The added pressure is a GOOD thing, it means the pumps will operate more efficiently. Also, the pressure drop of the small tank being faster is known, and can be accounted for. You're probably right about the LOX tank having faster boiloff due to increased heating, but I'm not sure it really matters in the few minutes that LOX spends in there.

@Everyday Astronaut Hi Tim, I'm have also one more question, about ISS single module cost without launch prices, like i read that future single lunar module will cost billions of dollars. It's very expensive, Like if someone want to build a mini hotel by shipping it with starship, he will need also billions of dollar actually to build the mini hotel ( in comparison with the earth size hotel). So, is there a way to reduce the cost of space construction? maybe by using heavier materials because of low launch cost? If hard to answer this question will be great to see video about it in the future. Personally thought orbital hotels is very important for the space industry.

Her aero surfaces are definitely NOT wings, nor are they flaps, they deserve their own name... "FLOPS."

Did the Raptor engines pass a vibration test, based on the vibration spectrum of the measured environment of the previous flights, especially SN8 ?
Semyon Sychev
Semyon Sychev 2 muaj më parë
Why did SpaceX Starship SN9 Explode? There is a version of what happened: In the Raptor engine, there is a fuel pump not coaxially located with the combustion chamber. Its rotor (shaft, gas turbines, screw centrifugal impellers) rotates at speeds of tens of thousands of revolutions per minute, weighs several tens of kilograms, and even hangs on hydrostatic bearings. It can be seen how the starship began to unfold, the engine begins to try to enter the operating mode. Something had already been torn off and thrown out of the engine compartment. The automatics decides to swing the motor to absorb some torque. It is at this moment that the engine fuel pump explodes, it immediately "dies". What could have happened? Yes, the same force from the gyroscopic effect, which at such speeds of rotation and rolling could reach tens or even hundreds of kilonewtons. Because the rotor weighs on a hydrostatic subscriber, it can "fidget" a little in it. Well, he touched the wall. A huge blank, in liquid methane, touches the wall at speeds of hundreds of meters per second. The fuel pump instantly explodes and flies out of the starship.
Kloko Loko
Kloko Loko 2 muaj më parë
@Semyon Sychev "But as far as I know, the axles of the turbo pumps are vertical, and there is only one way to fix this, by redesigning the engine by turning the turbo pump 90 degrees." I like this very much, rotation of the rocket axis should be same as shaft rotation axis = no gyroscopic effect. 👍
Kloko Loko
Kloko Loko 2 muaj më parë
@Semyon Sychev Also from your suggestion firing first engine during whole flip should destroy first engine but we do not see that. We see first engine firing, than second try to fire but it can't and then first engine work until RUD.
Kloko Loko
Kloko Loko 2 muaj më parë
@Semyon Sychev Problem is different ( non linear) pressure fluctuation between LOX and LCH4 header tanks during whole flip manoevre and engine firing from 1 to 2 and even 3 what Elon suggest now. I do not know if this is the case. Why? Because I do not know is it just enough to have more than 6 bars at engines from both tanks no matter how difference it is or should pressure of both be equal and precisely controlled before 300 bar pressure pump. What is interesting is that engines work without problems almost 5 min and than in those 10 seconds they fail. I have huge doubts that they fail in those 10 second because engine malfunction ( but it can be your suggestion from gyroscopic effect) but because they need precise mix of propellant and oxidizer. Too much oxygen and you burn the engine.. What I think that is, is that we see in both times (SN8 and 9) is that 1 engine starts but when second try to start even first one now have change color of the flame ( LOX LCH4 mix fluctuation). You see that second firing of engine affect first one. IMHO this is clear propellant pressure problems from header tanks.
Semyon Sychev
Semyon Sychev 2 muaj më parë
@Kloko Loko I don't think the pressure drop from 6 to 11 bar is that big of a problem considering that the pressure in the engine itself is 300 bar. I'm not sure. If the version about the gyroscopic effect is correct, then if the axes of the turbo pumps in the Raptor engine were horizontal, then it would be easy to solve the problem, it would be enough to turn the engine so that the axes of the turbo pumps coincide with the pitch axis of the starship, then the gyroscopic effect will not affect in any way when belly flop maneuver. But as far as I know, the axles of the turbo pumps are vertical, and there is only one way to fix this, by redesigning the engine by turning the turbo pump 90 degrees.
Kloko Loko
Kloko Loko 2 muaj më parë
This is true, I do not know why they use so fast gimbal mechanism. Maybe they have to design raptor with just nozzle gimbal. Also I have one other problem and it's related to oxygen header tank. Tank is in nose and pressure in tank I think is same as main tanks, 6 bars. In rocket horizontal position ( belly free fall) hidrostatic pressure is about 6 bars but when rocket change horizontal position (for landing maneuver) suddenly you have 50 meters tank height from engines, this is about 5 bars extra on 6bars so 11 barst at engine. This is difference between horizontal and vertical rocket position. Also 50 meters line IMHO is very long and pressure fluctuation between 1 engine and 2 engines or what Elon now suggest that they need to fire 3 engines on landing is significant (every engine need about 500kg/sec LOX and about 400kg/sec LCH4). So you see you need 1500kg/sec to push trough 50 meter line for 3 engines of Oxygen. Also third thing is that header methane tank (LCH4) is inside and LOX header tank is outside heating on strong wind. 2 different conditions. Yes, methane header tank have also pressure difference from horizontal and vertical rocket position but it's much lower at 15 meters, not 50m like LOX header tank. What do you think about all this? Great comment about gyroscopic effect !

Spacex should use flux pinning to stop Starship in bellyflop above an electrically charged pad. The cold belly from sloshed liquid oxygen/methane on ceramic heat shield tiles can create a superconductor quantum locking situation that cushions, slows, and stops the rocket in mid air. Tim ask Elon if they have considered this. Just imagine seeing Starship (BFR) skydiving down to the pad, slowing, stopping, floating, and rotating like the actual BFG!
