SpaceX will attempt a 12.5-kilometer hop with their Starship SN8 prototype vehicle. SN8 will lift off under the power of its three Raptor engines and fly to an altitude of approximately 12.5 km (~41,000 ft). At that altitude, using its body flaps, SN8 will flip to a horizontal position and descend belly-first.
Just prior to landing, using a combination of its engines and body flaps, SN8 will flip around again to attempt a soft propulsive landing.

Spacex should use flux pinning to stop Starship in bellyflop above an electrically charged pad. The cold belly from sloshed liquid oxygen/methane on ceramic heat shield tiles can create a superconductor quantum locking situation that cushions, slows, and stops the rocket in mid air. Tim ask Elon if they have considered this. Just imagine seeing Starship (BFR) skydiving down to the pad, slowing, stopping, floating, and rotating like the actual BFG!

If the cause of the crash is the fuel moving too much around in the tanks, then why don't they use the same kind of grids in the tank, like airplanes have in their wings. The grids/ribs serve for the structural strength of the wings, as well as avoiding the fuel from moving around and unstabilize the airplane. See Google Search on: "airplane fuel tank ribs".

Hi Tim, I watch your channel quite a bit and i especially enjoy your deep dives. My two year old son apparently prefers to watch rockets launch over stuf like peppa pig and paw patrol. Keep in mind, that the vehicle they've tested is just the second stage. The first stage will have over 20 Raptor engines with around 17 million lb of thrust.

To add admiration, even the crash on sn9, was performed incorrectly, it tried to impersonate a very high free-fall reentry into Earth but was less then half the troposphere, then pulled up to quick using nothing but raw thrust too late. The epic part of a crash, NO landing gear suspenstion legging, (like a jet with no wheels)

I'm glad elon and SpaceX shifted those forward canards back from the nose cone. I think it's changed the center of gravity to allow for better orientation with the belly flip maneuver. Plus it looks great. 👍

A great video to watch if you need to be bitten by the space bug - EA is sooo emotional that you can't help but be carried along by his enthusiasm. Watching this, though (once again), it was easy to see that SN8 was just about perfectly vertical as it touched down. It made me wonder if the landing legs had deployed (which it seems that they didn't), would the vehicle have crash-landed, rather than crashing in an explosion? I wonder how SpaceX deploys those legs. I hope it's not by direct command - that would be stupid. If I'd designed the thing, the legs would've been triggered by a lookdown radar, set to deploy them at a certain distance above the ground. Maybe the vehicle could've been saved, at least partially.

Wow, even one week later, watching it gets better. Just erase the final 2-3 seconds, and CGI in a properly pressurized fuel line, perfect landing! But get some real legs that can handle an imperfect landing!!! Throwing away model slows things down too much! We want to test those welding joints under a jarred landing, not an exploding one!

Just rewatched for your reaction. :) I had a couple of things to think about since the launch. 1.) The engine reliability has to be out of this world. They need to be relit several times without maintenance. As far as burn time, how long will they need to burn to escape Mars atmosphere. And speaking of mars. 2.) Will the flip data profile translate to martian atmosphere and be able to compensate for the increased velocity and less air resistance when making the flip. I feel like they need to do an early Venus slingshot trip with two Ships. One as a sacrifice death dive to beam data back to the 2nd one in orbit. Then relay to space X to update the mars landing profile. Update the one in orbit and test it. Don't want to potentially crash a fleet of cargo ships on the surface. Moon landing will be easy as its a just a slow propulsion decent to the surface.
