I was looking for information on how the fairings are actually controlled during their reentry. They are not what you would call aerodynamically shaped. I think it is a real technical feat that they are caught by the recovery vessels at all. Think about (high) winds, turbulence and other atmospheric conditions. This made me curious. I found this text on wiki: “In March 2017, SpaceX for the first time recovered a fairing from the SES-10 mission, aided by thrusters and a steerable parachute helping it glide towards a gentle touchdown on water”, which kind of answers that question. It would however be awesome though to have some video / images of that reentry. Do you know if that kind of material is available somewhere?

Some rockets have a rubber diaphragm between the fuel and the pressurizing gas, so in that case, the gas WILL force the fuel down in the tank. How do liquid thrusters work(such as on Apollo luner vehicle)? How do THEY get started, unless they have diaphragms? Some of the early Soviet rockets could not remain in space more than 90 days because the rubber diaphragm would degrade.

Could the falcon9 booster do a "belly flop" to slow down before landing in order to reduce fuel weight/cost a bit and/or increase the possible pay load weight?
Anders
Anders 3 muaj më parë
@D Blake Perhaps it still should be tried maybe in conjunction with parachutes and heat shield. I believe F9 will still have a role to play in the future, especially if it is altered to survive re entry and landing. I wonder if the rocket sub structure could handle such a re design.
D Blake
D Blake 3 muaj më parë
@Anders I’ve wondered how F9’s 2nd stage could be recovered. It surprised me that component is wasted. If Starship wasn’t to replace F9, I believe such a method could be employed to meet the goal of 100% reusable spacecraft.
Anders
Anders 3 muaj më parë
@D Blake I guess you´r right, just wondered if there would be any usable effect.
D Blake
D Blake 3 muaj më parë
Probably could, but why? Understand the Starship booster won’t be belly flopping either. The maneuver is meant as a reentry method and to soften the landing for people’s soft squishy bodies on board.

Has Tim D. or anyone else done a clear video on why SpaceX can land rockets and nobody else has (or said it was possible)? What are the key hurdles they overcame?
Odysseus Rex
Odysseus Rex 3 muaj më parë
@Greg Cavanaugh No, it doesn't. Don't know what Tim said to give you that idea. The burn takes place in hard vacuum and lasts for a couple of minutes. The gasses then dissipate.
Greg Cavanaugh
Greg Cavanaugh 3 muaj më parë
@Odysseus Rex the reentry burn both slows the 1st stage as well as pretty sure the exhaust from those rockets creates a buffer or bow wave to push off some of the heat. Tim D talked about this in one of his videos I believe.
Odysseus Rex
Odysseus Rex 3 muaj më parë
@Greg Cavanaugh You are right, all of those things are new and necessary. They are not using rocket exhaust as a heat shield though, not sure where you got that. They fire the rocket briefly in space in order to deorbit, and then again just at landing.
Odysseus Rex
Odysseus Rex 3 muaj më parë
@Nolsp No actually, the technology has not always been there. Vertical landing of orbital class boosters was simply impossible until very recently. The necessary computing power and tracking capability simply did not exist.
Greg Cavanaugh
Greg Cavanaugh 3 muaj më parë
So it's not that the Merlin's are able to be re-lit more consistently, or that they are able to be throttled more precisely or to a greater range of thrust? What about the idea of using rocket exhaust as a heat shield on reentry, was that new? Or is it also a product of the advancements in small computer power that can calculate all the parameters to land on the fly? Seems like if it was considered impossible, there's more to the answer than: "they decided to try it."

Johnny Matias
Johnny Matias 3 muaj më parë
@Ron de Goey that's true, if something was destined to hit that stuff, it would have to barely miss the spacecraft as well. I wonder if orbital stability is mass dependent too, like those being such tiny chunks will allow their orbit to decay quicker, or allow solar radiation to disrupt their orbits quicker.
Ron de Goey
Ron de Goey 3 muaj më parë
I think it’s ice from the rocket, but if it weren’t, in space it’s all about relative speed. The speed and direction of the floating pieces is almost exactly the same as that of the spaceship so I think it wouldn’t be that big of a deal 😌

Hi Tim. since you have access to talk to the spacex folks, why is that they haven't improve the cameras on the drone ship to be able to capture a better scene of the landing, I personally think the footage can be much better...

I think they have good cameras on the drone ships and most probably have very high-def footages of the landings. It's just that their live streaming at sea is still very limited in terms of bandwith (via satellite). Also, why would they bother improving the livestream? They have more important things to work on.
