SpaceX’s Starlink V1.0 L16, also known as Starlink 17, mission will launch 60 Starlink satellites atop its Falcon 9 rocket. The Falcon 9 will lift off from Launch Complex 39A (LC-39A), at Kennedy Space Center, in Florida. Starlink 16 will mark the 16th operational Starlink mission, boosting the total number of Starlink satellites launched to 1,013.

Awesome. Born leaning, successfully landed for a long time leaning, ended uncontrolled launch, then uncontrolled crash landing, ending leaning into a rapid uncontrolled disassembly.

I don't understand why Spacex doesn't use an helicopter with a hook to catch the parachute and, as a consequence, the fairing? If, as reported on wikipedia, a fairing half really weighs only 850 kilograms, any heavy-duty helicopter could easily do the job. Since the fairing falls slowly towards the sea, the helicopter would also have enough time to repeat the maneuver in case of failure. By doing that, the success rate of the fairing recoveries would reach almost 100%.

Hey everyday astronaut. Angry astronaut was saying he was concerned about the velocity at which SN8 fell, like it didn't make much drag to slow down. Could you make a video looking at the decent speed of say falcon 9 or grasshopper vs the speed of SN8 in the bellyflop to assess how effective it is?

Why not able to record landing then replay after land. Or improve communication so don’t lose signal.
Dalton Mojica
Dalton Mojica 2 muaj më parë
The transmitting equipment are being subjected to massive vibrations from the engine, as well as the plasma from the engine itself, which both often cause communications to be very unstable. Unfortunately, this is quite difficult to address, and will most likely require resources that could instead be directed to more rocket launches or further research and development. As for recording and replaying the footage though, this can probably be done with some relatively cheap modifications. For now, however, I don’t know if the droneship cameras currently have video recording and storage capability at all, or if they can only transmit real-time footage.

Question about "The Martian" and the crazy intersecting orbits you mentioned: In the book, they matched the speed, but were offset by 70 KM (and then they did the crazy maneuver to to cross orbits). I allege that if the 2 orbits were on escape from Mars and "parallel" (would have to be if the velocities matched), then they had "all day" to make the capture, as these 2 orbits would remain "parallel" for some time. This should have permitted the transfer ship to make the meeting using its 3mm per second ion engines. My calculations show that if they thrusted toward the ascent vehicle for 1 hour, they would have reduced distance by 19km. Coasting for another hour would gain them another 38km, and decelerating another hour would gain another 19km, or a total of 76km. if they ran the engines continuously, they would meet in less then the 3 hours, and have velocities matched. The worst case would be to have the initial positions vertically offset (relative to Mars). Second worst would be to have lateral offset, and best case would be directly ahead or behind. Could you run that through Kerbal?

8 flights. PLANTED that landing, DEAD CENTER! Why can't Boeing make reusable boosters? Less profit in it for them maybe?
Odysseus Rex
Odysseus Rex 2 muaj më parë
Sort of. Boeing does what people pay them to do. No one is paying them to develop a reusable booster. SpaceX develops without being paid, or at least not very much, so they can sell their services and dominate the launch industry. The only reason ULA, half owned by Boeing, is developing a new booster at all is because Congress said they could no longer by Russian made engines for their old one. That booster is intended to do just what the old one did, get them a safe, guaranteed profitable five to ten launches a year as a national carrier, not open up new market share for them. Since it won't be reusable, my expectation is they will lose that national carrier role to Blue Origin in the next several years.

Odysseus Rex
Odysseus Rex 2 muaj më parë
@sursurrus No, they are designed to fly ten times without major refurbishment. The plan has always been that, after every ten flights, they will be refurbished and returned to flight, with a total lifetime of one hundred flights. Of course, with Starship coming over the horizon, it is entirely possible that the Falcons will be retired before any of them get anywhere near a hundred launches.
sursurrus
sursurrus 2 muaj më parë
@Odysseus Rex if they recover it a 10th time, might be a better idea to take it apart for research. I thought these were only designed to fly 10x each, max?

Imcons Equetau 2 muaj më parë
Aspirationally, 100 launches with full refurbishment after about 10 launches. This is a moving target that depends on what results they get. Refurbishment may be deferred beyond 10 launches. Wait and see. Early on, the boosters went through a static fire before each launch. Lately, none before Starlink launches. It's an evolving art.
Odysseus Rex

The fact that spacex can subject their boosters to the equivalent of this kind of wear and tear continuously is astonishing.

@TraditionalAnglican Booster and Company dictated by the senior Senators, thus "Senate Launch System". The Commercial Space Program does not dictate who produces a spacecraft. It doesn't dictate which launch system is used for a spacecraft. It also doesn't operate "cost plus". This is obviously a great improvement on conventional practice. I really don't see how the older companies can break away from their ossified habits.
TraditionalAnglican
TraditionalAnglican 2 muaj më parë
New Glenn hasn’t flown yet, so New Shepard was what Blue Origin launched. Artemis is a mission architecture, not a rocket - It’s horribly expensive & inefficient & adds complexity & danger to the mission, but it’s not a rocket. The insult to a “Hanger Queen” is the Space Launch System which is 5 years behind schedule & 50+% over budget. Both of the last 2 have been dictated to NASA by Congress.

If you interview Elon Musk could you ask him about the cost breakdown of the Starlink base stations? Are they profiting from sales? If so, how much of the money from profits will be channeled back into Starship development? Whats the difference in cost for SpaceX between launching on Falcon9 vs Starship per satellite?
Odysseus Rex
Odysseus Rex 2 muaj më parë
@Jon Jacoby the argument from ignorance is inherently false.
Jon Jacoby
Jon Jacoby 2 muaj më parë
@Odysseus RexYes I am wrong but I argue from the ignorant stand point that business is overtly shady and you must hide you assets in foreign shell companies to skip out on paying taxes. Having separate ledgers is common practice and lkeeping losses maximised decreases taxes. So from a criminal point of view it's foolish to combine two companies financially like that... when you can make both a burden skip out on taxes take the money declare bankruptcy.... winning... Elon Musk is obviously ahead of this game and there are many facets to his diverse talents. He must not have a winning strategy if he hasn't declared bankruptcy.... just talking conservativly.
Odysseus Rex
Odysseus Rex 2 muaj më parë
@Jon Jacoby No, you are simply wrong about that. Again, they are not separate companies. I don't know where you get your impression of the corporate structure of SpaceX or American corporate law, but you are simply wrong.
Jon Jacoby
Jon Jacoby 2 muaj më parë
@Odysseus Rex Negative admin and billing for starlink not starship... different pocket.. can't trade without approval of corporate interests that smartly remain separated.
Odysseus Rex
Odysseus Rex 2 muaj më parë
The actual answer is not known, but I have seen analyses suggesting that they are actually losing money on each antenna and control box. This makes them a loss leader. The real money will, of course, be in the service itself, so they can well afford it. A launch of a Falcon 9 probably costs SpaceX between 30 and 40 million dollars and can put up sixty Starlink satellites. By contrast, when it becomes operational, Starship will probably have a similar cost per flight, but it will drop over time to under 10 million. It will be able to orbit 400 Starlink satellites.
