On December 9th, 2020, SpaceX conducted a test of their Starship SN8 prototype in Boca Chica, Texas outside of Brownsville. Despite very low expectations, it successfully lifted off, completed 2 planned engine shutdowns and reached its planned apogee of 12.5km.
Then it shut down its engine and belly-flopped back to the landing pad, successfully relit 2 of its engines, and performed a bellyflop to tail-down maneuver, before losing pressure in the fuel header tank, causing it to lose its engines and crash down faster than survivable, although right on target.
This was shot from nearby South Padre Island along with Cosmic Perspective (Ryan Chylinski and Maryliz Bender), Spadre (Gene and Rachel Gore).
Here's our full realtime 4K recut with clean audio in 4K -
Definitely watch Cosmic Perspective's SN8 mini film!!! It's incredible! -

Why not try engines re-ignite and flip back earlier on descent to avoid too much speed? Better than a crash landing and a pile of burnt out metal. I understand the extra weight of fuel but slowing down and landing upon re-entry is rather important too, isn't it?

The change in plume colour and then the really dirty burn, could the fuel moving in the tanks and not getting to the engines have caused the failure? Like everyone I am hoping that the next time I watch it it will land.

Tell Elon: Wouldn’t a Red-hot Electric coil dunked into the Methane or LOX tank raise the tank pressure quickly? or if that would heat the bulk of the liquid, squirt a small amount of the liquid gas onto a red-hot electric coil suspended above the liquid gas. This should pressurize the gas tank quickly. There is already an emergency pressure relief valve so it can’t over pressurize.

Hi Tim, Awesome Vids. Thanks! Regarding SN 9 or 10... Will they get Starship to 35 km do the flip maneuver and land/hover to simulate Martian atmosphere.. or because gravity is less can they accurately simulate the flip and land maneuver at lower altitude? I see the Ingenuity Mars Helicopter Nasa is sending has a lot of compensation for the greatly reduced atmosphere.

Can someone explain the green flames just prior to landing? I understand there was a loss in fuel pressure, yes? So, essentially, it was a lean fuel mixture and that caused the engine basically to destroy itself due to the excessive engine temperatures, is this correct? I find this all so fascinating. And to think this craft is literally the size of a tall building, falling through the air, and performing these maneuvers. Simply breathtaking.

Cygnus 3 muaj më parë
Could anybody who knows explain why the flame turned green intermittently at the end? Was it changing fuel ratios or something?
Cygnus 3 muaj më parë
@Everyday Astronaut That's fascinating! I was going to say that a green flame is usually characteristic of copper burning, but I never would have thought it was doing that to the engine.
Everyday Astronaut
Everyday Astronaut 3 muaj më parë
The fuel pressure was too low in the fuel header tank so the engine was running on basically hot oxygen, meaning the green you saw was the engine eating itself, burning copper from the inside of the engine!

Everyday Astronaut
Everyday Astronaut 3 muaj më parë
They didn’t fill it all the way. They filled it only about 1/3 full of fuel and no payload. If they filled it all the way, not even 6 raptors could lift off. With super heavy and a full operational starship, it can’t get to the moon without refueling. Watch my video “starship vs Falcon 9” I think you’ll learn a lot of fun little tid bits!

I just did a report for my Acoustics class involving the sound power of rocket engines and how to suppress/direct that energy. Modern rocket engines vary in sound power level (depending on the thrust * exit velocity), but an average would be 145dB to 180dB (where the Saturn-V is the loudest on record @ 220dB). For comparison, a 1 megaton nuclear bomb creates about 257dB! What caught my eye during the launch of the SN8 is the fact there are birds flying within a few hundred meters of the pad. Normally, this is close enough so that the acoustic energy is enough to kill a human being. I guess the 2nd stage of the Starship didn't produce enough energy to take down those birds? Not that I wanted the birds to die, but it caught my attention.

hey Tim, Elon's spacex sn8 prototype flying cigar/ joint/ looked good in your cosmic perspective, real time and slow motion. excellent footage watching forward and aft actuating canards working brilliantly. and the body flip back to vertical up. 90% success rate. the raptors even managed to slow 70 80 tons of stainless steel spaceship almost to landing leg deployment speed before spewing out its copper innards. good to see the nose cone still intact, that's where everyone's going to be seated.

If your talking about the two packs of explosive on the hull? I doubt it. There was no need to trigger these packs. Apparently you can hit, explode, bash, smash plastic explosive, (from watching the investigation of the unplanned explosion of one of the Apollo Capsules Hatch's after landing in the sea: which later turned out to prove a static electrical charge triggered the detonators) but it won't start to 'rapidly burn' without a direct contact of an internal detonator, to start the high temperature chain reaction required to activate the chemicals.
