Still feels like a touchdown when they land, but the announcers are seeming less enthusiastic than before--these flights really are getting that "routine" feel, in spite of being possibly the most cutting-edge orbital rocket in service right now. Says a lot about SpaceX's performance record, we'll done!

Is the "I love You" drone ship totally remote control? (i.e. no bomb proof rooms in it for workers) What happens after a landing. Do support boats with actual people on board sail over to the drone ship, and secure the lander? Or does the lander just sit on the drone ship until it gets back to land. If they don't strap it down, is there a chance it could tip over in rough seas on the way back to land?

I love the fact that space launches are getting less fanfare because they are so routine now. I still like seeing the fanfare during firsts, like crew dragon just a while back, but they have been launching something like once a week lately it seems, so it is good to see if becoming something that looks easy for them.

Super Dracos are only used for launch abort, so they removed them to save weight.
Michael Flor
Michael Flor 4 muaj më parë
They use nitrogen thrusters to manoeuvre in space, I believe. The Super Draco's use hypergolic fuel, and are used for emergency procedures (although originally they were going to be used as landing thrusters), so without human cargo, they don't need the emergency engines.

Think of explosions as rapid oxidization. It becomes an explosion when materials create more oxygen then they need for their own reaction. I remember from redux calculation in chemistry that TNT produces about 16 times the oxygen needed. In general, you need a flame of levels of compression to start the reaction. The point is parking massive amounts of rocket fuel next to a habitat on Mars, is a lot safer than the same situation on earth. An atmosphere without oxygen is not without advantages :)

Personally, I liked not having a 10-second countdown. I have no issue with saying "10 seconds" or perhaps even "5 seconds", but the 10-9-8-7... seems old-fashioned after 6 decades of televised launches, though perhaps it makes it more fun for kids as it may help teach them to count backwards ;). I'd rather they just show the timer on the screen and report milestone events on the nets.
Mike Hart
Mike Hart 4 muaj më parë
Why don't they just make the trunk able to work like the docking node? Leave it in space and attach a bunch together.
Mike Hart
Mike Hart 4 muaj më parë
@william Greene right. I would think with some modifications it could be made useful in space. Already paid all the money to get it up there. But truth is, once Starship is operational, won't be an issue right? 🥳
william Greene
william Greene 4 muaj më parë
@Mike Hart That is true. They probably could leave it in orbit at that point but there isn't any thrusters on the trunk so they would have to go get it with something. It has a pretty big volume and solar panels so it would be useable maybe.
Mike Hart
Mike Hart 4 muaj më parë
@william Greene right, but what if they left it in orbit and then they start the de-orbit burn. I think once they start the deorbit burn they likely don't have the fuel to regain orbit. At that point it's go time.
william Greene
william Greene 4 muaj më parë
@Mike Hart Yes if there is a problem before reentry and they need to stay in orbit for an extra day ( which can happen ) they would run out of battery power , so yes they need the solar panels that are on the trunk in case of emergencies on the way back from orbit.
Mike Hart

CRS7 blew up well after MaxQ at T+2:29 in June 2015. The cause was a broken bolt that secured a strut which held a helium bottle in place. The bottle was inside the second stage liquid oxygen tank. This caused the bottle to burst which consequently overpressurized the tank making it explode. The bolt was rated for 10,000 lbs but broke at about 2,000 lbs. Amos-6 blew up during fueling for a static fire before launch in September 2016 so it never actually flew. It was caused by a faulty helium bottle again inside the second stage liquid oxygen tank. The outer wall of the bottle was fractured and allowed liquid oxygen to enter. Upon presurizing, friction in the bottle wall ignited the liquid oxygen causing the explosion. Those are the only 2 incidents that caused mission failures. The first stage has a perfect flying record as far as I know (on ascent at least).
GrummanPilot99
